What Lovely Weather…

June 8, 2010

Today I am working my web shift for my Capstone. The weather is … well, look for yourself.

I took this right outside KOMU. I’ve actually learned something about people and the weather today, though. Our website views were around 200…a streak of lightning followed by its booming thunder streaked across the sky. The number on our site rose to over 1,000. Whoa. People. Care. About. The. Weather.

Thanks to CartoonStock.com for this one.

In other news, I went to Chicago this weekend – woo-hoo! It was my good friend Emily’s 21, so Andrew and I drove the 9-hour trek to make sure she had fun! Here’s a picture of the windy city itself, taken at Navy Pier.

The Windy CityInterestingly enough, my Irish-bred and Chicago-raised friend told me it isn’t called “The Windy City” because of actual wind, but because of all the hot air the politicians blow out over the city.

An article from the Huffington Post agrees, but also says the claim is controversial. Read it, here.

So, of course, I found the USA Today article mentioned in the Huffington Post… it claims the reason it’s called The Windy City is unknown. It says the windiest city in the nation is actually in Kansas.

Speaking of older movies, let’s go back even further and talk about my obsession with Mary Pickford… I usually put a picture of her after every post, but I don’t think I’ve ever explained why.

Let’s do that, shall we?

I won’t start with the boring facts, let’s get right into the nitty-gritty of why she’s important to the film industry even today. You know those little things called ‘camera angles’? Well, she helped bring them to modern cinema.

Audiences of the silent films thought they weren’t getting their entire money’s worth if they didn’t see the actor from head to toe. Pickford helped changed that and often incorporated different angles in her films.

She also created United Artists with Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin. She was the highest paid actress of her time and also won an Academy Award the first year it was given for a talking film.

She was the first superstar, the first to feel the fall from movie fame and the woman who, as titled in a 1997 biography, made Hollywood.

To check out the book, click here. Pickford also wrote an auto-bio called Sunshine and Shadow, which I’ve had the delight to read. Click here for that one.

For more info on Pickford, check it out, here.

See you next week!

And what good would a blog be without pictures? Yes, you may officially call me a crazy old cat lady now…

1. Babybun

Babybun is my baby! I have had him since I was 7. My Gma even wrote him an ode…I may put that at the end of the post. We got Bunny from my stepbrother. He was keeping some cats at his apartment illegally and when they found out, they were evicted (the cats at least), so we took him!

He's my #1.
He’s my #1.

2. Kat

How we got Kat and Onyx is an interesting story. The day their mother had them, she was hit by a car. We literally raised them from birth! Kat was the runt and Mom wasn’t sure he would make it through the night, but he did and now he is one of our biggest kitties!

Named after my friend, Katherine.

3. Onyx

Kat’s sister. This picture is when she was just a baby! It is also my favorite stone and a character in a book I have been working on since 8th grade. 🙂

She thought this was the coolest toy!

4. Clairvoyant

Claire is my cat from college. One night it was storming and my roommate, Jenn, and I heard a meowing in the night. We opened up our sliding glass door and in ran Claire. He just made himself at home and has been part of the family ever since!

He loves boxes!

5. Dusty

Dusty is also 18, she is my Grandma’s cat who lives with us! She’s very picky about what she eats and throws a fit if Kat or Onyx get in the room. She protests by going under the bed and pooping. Lovely…

6. Slinky

We got Slinky from one of my best friends, Sadie. She didn’t look like she was going to make it, but she is a healthy, beautiful kitten now!

7. M-U

We got M-U from one of my little brother’s friends, Dustin. He was moving away with his mom and no longer allowed to keep her. So, of course, we took her in. She and Slinky are best friends.

It stands for Mizzou!

Here is a picture of Jacob, my little brother.

Always the charming one…

8. Tasuki (Taz)

I named Taz back when I was into this anime/manga series, Fushigi Yuugi. He was one of the main characters on the show.

Here is a picture of Tasuki the character and Tasuki the cat…

9. Patches

Patches is the brother of another one of kitties we lost to a car accident. His name was Boots. Patches had kittens with Eclipse (Twilight, Sneakers and Socks). Socks was named after Patches brother, Boots, as they look identical!

We rescued Patches and his siblings from a flea-infested house.

10. Citrus

Citrus is Patches’ arch nemesis for whatever reason. We found him by a dumpster at Rick’s C-Store here at the Lake. Another little kid was trying to coo him into the car, but he ran. When I tried, he came right to me and curled up in my lap!

Mom calls him our little "Junk Yard" kitty

11. A.C.E. (Attack Cat Extraordinaire)

ACE is my Mom’s baby, she likes to “hold him like a baby”, where she curls him on his back and cradles him like a small child. The crazy thing? He loves it!

12. Lisa

Lisa came from my old friend Shelby. She plead her case to my mother…they were moving and her Mom was either going to just leave them there or take them to the pound. We couldn’t let that happen…so lovely Lisa became our own!

Lisa was hit by a car and survived!

13. Twilight (named before the books, thank you)

Twilight is a sweet, slinky (and fast!) kitty. He is one of Eclipse’s sons.

14. Eclipse

Eclipse is the big mama of Socks, Sneakers, Twilight, Lump of Coal, Naughty and Nice. Then we got her spaid.

Jacob affectionately named her “Queen Latifah”.

15. Socks

Socks came to us from Eclipse and Patches. He was named after Patches brother, Boots, who looks just like him! Boots is on the left, Socks is on the right. Our little Bootsie passed away when he was hit by a car. They didn’t even stop. 😥

Boots, "Socks' Uncle", is on the left. Socks in on the right.

16. Naughty

Naughty is one of Eclipse’s sons, he and the next two are more ‘garage’ cats and they are hard to snap pictures of! He is tiger striped like Patches.

17. Nice

Nice is one of Eclipse’s daughters. She is also tiger striped.

18. Lump of Coal

Coal is black and white, he got his coat from his mama, Eclipse.

19. Sneakers

Sneakers is Socks’ brother. He looks more like his papa, Patches.

20. Amelia Pickford
Amelia is the second cat that goes to college with me. She was born on April 20, 2009. She is one of the cutest kittens I have ever seen and poses in the most un-cat like poses I’ve ever seen! She also likes to climb into anything she can fit!

21. Bagheera

Named after the black panther from Disney’s The Jungle Book (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0xQ89pF5zo)

We recently got “Bags” from my friends Brady and Kaitlin.

22. Tiger

Tiger is another one of Eclipse’s. We haven’t been able to catch him yet, but he has the prettiest coat I have ever seen!

Well, this post was a few months in the making! Sorry gang, hope you weren’t hanging by a thread or anything. 🙂

Until next time,

The Break of Spring.

March 25, 2009

Firstly, I WILL BE ON THE AIR APRIL 6!

Yay!  Tune in to KOMU around 7:45 a.m.

Now onto the blog…

This week was supposed to be my spring break from Mizzou (note the word “supposed”). Since break, I have worked at KOMU for most of it. I pulled a Sunday night shift, an all-day Monday shift (7:15 a.m. – 11 p.m.), took an iNews Avid edit test Tuesday (which I passed – yay) and then worked today as well. I am not complaining, mind you, but I just keep myself awfully busy even when it is supposed to be a break.

I think one great thing is the new Pepper & Friends set. Until the official digital switch-over, we are in a shed. A soybean shed…with a barn cat even!  To see him, click here to watch the open of Pepper and Friends.  Paul introduces him toward the middle.

Other than work, however, I have been able to start reading a book (for FUN even)! It is called So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore? It is fascinating. I first started reading it to see if I could use it as a mini-book club for my youth group kids at Wilkes Blvd. I think it may be a little over their heads, but even though that won’t work out for them, it has been a great and inspiring read for me!

The excerpt Amazon.com gives is,

“What would you do if you met someone you thought just might be one of Jesus original disciples still living in the 21st Century? That’s Jake’s dilemma as he meets a man who talks of Jesus as if he had known him, and whose way of living challenges everything Jake had previously known. So You Don t Want to Go To Church Anymore is Jake s compelling journal that chronicles thirteen conversations with his newfound friend over a four-year period and how those exchanges turn Jake’s world upside-down. With his help, Jake faces his darkest fears, struggles through brutal circumstances and comes out on the other side in the joy and freedom he always dreamed was possible. If you’re tired of just going through the motions of Christianity and want to mine the depths of what it really means to live deeply in Christ, you ll find Jake s story will give you hope for your own. This book probes the difficult questions and offers some far-reaching answers. It just might turn your world upside-down as well!”

I haven’t worked on any projects for school so far this week, but I plan to Friday. I should probably jump on my Meteorology reading as well. Want to hear an interesting meteorological factoid? If you compare a night with clear skies to a night with cloudy skies, the night with clouds will always be warmer. This is because the clouds act like “blankets” to the earth and send the heat that is trying to rise and escape back down to the ground.

Nifty, huh?

If I made an educated guess, I would say these are altocumulus clouds. Courtesy of flickr.com

Since I don’t have much in the way of “journalistic reflection” this week, I am going to rant about something. If you’ve been reading this blog or even slightly glancing over it, you will notice there are pictures of Ms. Mary Pickford after about every post. I try to tie the picture in with something interesting or something I have talked about during the blog, but this week I am going to point out what I would call an idiotic comparison. I discovered this almost a year ago and it still makes my blood slightly simmer.

Someone (from a prestigious newspaper no less) had the audacity to compare Mary Pickford to Paris Hilton.

Ugh.

This is the picture posted on the blog.

Until next week,

After this blog, I would look upset too Mary.
